A Very Brief Interview with Paula Newlands

Paula Newlands is my ultimate muse. She is all over my photography portfolio and always fun to shoot with. I am quite fortunate to have her as a muse. She has graced the runways of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York, signed with three major model agencies (LOOK, NEXT, ELITE), and have been featured in many major ad campaigns and magazine publications. When she’s not busy being a model, she runs StyleNest. And when she’s not busy running her business, she answers to interviews like mine.

Me: What was the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your modeling career?
Paula: I got flown to Tahiti for 10 days on a direct booking and only worked 1 and 1/2 days.  I believe it was a French gossip mag! Which had mind boggled me as to why they’d do a spread in Tahiti!  I also got flown to India for one of my first shoots ever to shoot John Hardy Jewelry and ended up on a Billboard in FL and didn’t know until my boyfriend at the time drove on the Turnpike and called me in NY to tell me! One of my first jobs was also the cover of Travel and Leisure Magazine where I was flown to St. Barts to shoot…. I’ve done quite some awesome things in my time. LOL.
Me: That’s pretty amazing, Paula!! Thank you for your time!

My Top Ten Shoots for 2011

I did not do as many shoots as 2009 and 2010, but I did have some many memorable shoots with several amazing models, makeup artists, hairstylists, wardrobe stylists and designers. As tradition (see last year’s) here are this year’s top ten memorable shoots:

10. Amalie – This was shot in Copenhagen. I had four shoots during my stay in that wonderful city, and my favorite was with Amalie. It was a very simple shoot and Amalie rocked it! She did her own makeup and hair, brought her clothes, it rained too but we made the most out of the day and shot at Hotel Denmark.
9.  Love + Keep – I got to finally do a shoot with my friend Van Kim Le who is an amazing jewelry designer, all handcrafted with love! I also brought out model Yulya Mango out of retirement as well. And I was finally reunited with Christina Chen and made her and the team some amazing crepes during hair and makeup!
8. Maxime – former Miss Pacifica and one of my favorite models to work with, Maxime has such a beautiful face. Always a special time each time I do a shoot with her. And great outcomes as well!  More
7. Ropa Pura – Photoshoot with designer Jumpei Ando, model Deborah, and makeup artist Justine T. in Paris!! This was my first shoot in Paris and it was an incredible experience doing a shoot with an amazing team and in an amazing Parisian neighborhood. Jumpei was also a designer I’ve been in contact with for months, and it was surreal actually doing a shoot together.
6. Anastasia Hisel- In the midst of the ASTONISH launch event and New York Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to sneak in a photo shoot with Anastasia at our rented loft in Little Italy. Despite not having a prep team and limited daylight, we pulled of a pretty fun shoot. I wish I could do another shoot with this amazing model, who now grace the pages of Cosmopolitan Magazine December Issue.

5. Boditecture- I teamed up with architect and designer Wen Guo of Boditecture for a fashion show onboard a yacht party hosted by Peanut Labs. I casted models Yulya Mango, Maxime Kumler, Bethany Pifer, Liana Estillore, and Alexis Hutt for the fashion show and did a fun shoot on the yacht beforehand.

4. Danielle Lo –  I shot with her about a year ago, and it took us a long time to finally shoot again. I had the pleasure of doing a shoot, a very fun one, with the beautiful exotic Danielle Lo with makeup artist Diana Su. She’s super famous now – already on the cover of several publications and the 2012 Import Tuner calendar! More

3. Morgan O’Marro – Funny story, Morgan messaged me back in 2009 to do a shoot – and it took me two years to finally say yes – but I wish I did say yes awhile back because she is one of the best models I’ve ever worked with!! All I can say is, cannot wait to do another shoot with her again! This one was styled by Diana Su and makeup by the wonderful Regard Tang.
2. Paula Newlands- This was two birds with one stone: I was dying to do another shoot with my favorite Brazilian model Paula Newlands and also shoot in Los Angeles again. It was like an itch finally being scratched. Also I discovered the wonderful Ashley Gomila, who is an amazing professional makeup artist based in Los Angeles! We were also joined by Carlos Jamieson, who is also one of the best Hollywood-based hairstylist! Very solid team. We shot this in Santa Monica on a beautiful November day!

1. Sille Sepp – Paris. Enough said.
I messaged a modeling agency in Paris to send me someone to test with, I did not realize they would send me an angel. Sille is perhaps the most amazing model I’ve ever shot with. I was also joined by an amazing design student Anh Duong from Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, one of the most prestigious fashion schools in the world. On top of that, Mika Asoh was our talented makeup artist from Japan. It was a shoot I’ll never forget – shooting in front of the Eiffel Tower, the pebble-stoned pathways, amazing alleyways, beautiful weather … I’ll be back in Paris someday.

Goodbye 2011. It was a pretty memorable year. I look forward to what 2012 brings!

Can’t Wait for Swimsuit Season!!

I am eagerly awaiting all the swimsuit magazine issues coming out next month. And I can’t wait for it to get warmer to start doing swimsuit shoots again.
Here are some photos from my swimwear shoots last year. Keep an eye out for my upcoming swimwear shoots this spring!

On a side note, it is one of my goals to become a S.I. Swimsuit or Victoria’s Secret Swimwear photographer. Wish me luck! Practice makes perfect, right?

Styling with Juliana Gallioli Part II

This was another look that stylist Juliana Gallioli pulled for Brazilian model Paula Newlands (Look SF, Elite NY, Next LA). Special thanks to makeup artist/ hairstylist Fizza Hussein Qadri.
Paula is wearing a White House | Black Market strapless floral dress, a Betsey Johnson lace shrug, and a necklace by Swarovski.

If you’ve enjoyed the looks by stylist Juliana Gallioli, I am pleased to announce that Juliana and I will be collaborating for another shoot. A little hint: It will be way over the top.

Styling with Juliana Gallioli Part I

Late last year, I got the chance to collaborate with stylist Juliana Gallioli (FIDM, San Francisco) for a styling project with Brazilian model Paula Newlands (Look SF, Elite NY, Next LA) and makeup artist/ hairstylist Fizza Hussein Qadri.

Here is one of our looks. Paula is in a White House | Black Market strapless Rosetta dress with a Swarovski necklace.

Top Ten Photo Shoots of 2010 #10-#6

Here are my top ten photo shoots of 2010. The criteria? The ones that were very memorable and always bring a smile on my face. In no particular order.

10. MOOSE Magazine – My first tearsheet!! This was a shoot for Madrid-based Fashion & Art magazine MOOSE Magazine for their second issue on April 2010. I have a beyond-awesome team with top-notch models Alicia Pulver and Paula Newlands, along with makeup artist/ hairstylist Shelly Cross, stylist Arianna Barrera, and photography assistant Robert Jue.

9. Phuong My Test Shoot - I responded to a casting from a new designer in San Francisco named Phuong My. Little did I know she was going to become one of my closests and dearest friends in this industry. Phuong My has also been a very influential part in both my personal and photography life. For this shoot, I had models Anna Ochal and Jasmin Rizzo and Makeup/Hairstylist Keke. I would later on do more shoots with her, including ones with Mirela P. Click here to check out Phuong My’s official website.

Anna and Jasmin at the Embarcadero piers.
Mirela at a high rise apartment in downtown SF.

8. Parluxe Catalog Shoot – This shoot was for a high-end Vietnamese retail clothing company. I had the privilege of working with models Lauren Currie (LOOK Models), Victoria Pham (who is also a famous Vietnamese beauty queen!) and Lanisa BuenaVista. I had a very fun and energetic team around me: Mike Polce and Phillip Wang as my assistants, Sarah Dean as the makeup artist, and Noelle Lynn as the hairstylist.

7. LANY Handbags – One of the biggest productions I have ever dealt with: 10 models (too many to type!), 2 makeup artists (Sarah Dean and Ignacio Maciel), 2 hairstylists (Shelly Cross and Keke), 2 hotels (Parc 55 and Hotel Vitale), 1 amazing stylist named Lim Konberg, 1 photography assistant, and 1 coordinator (Melissa Villarama) and her assistant (Chris Hobson) all shot in two days. For my old post of this event, click here

6. Maxime Kumler (Miss Pacifica 2010) – The most beautiful girl I have ever worked with. Maxime is a natural beauty and has always made my portfolio shine. This shoot was for her Miss Pacifica promo shots with Jessica Lee as our hair and makeup artist. Mike Polce was also my photography assistant. For my old post of this event, click here

Time for bed. Will continue #5-#1 later.
